Recap from last week’s snippet: Cecilia found her father’s journal. Should she read it or not?

She glanced at the book again as she chewed on her lower lip in thought, then murmured, “Read it and return it.” There was no sense in letting her mother know she stumbled upon the book.
She placed the journal on the coffee table intent on making herself a cup of tea before she indulged in reading her father’s words. She headed to the kitchen located down the hall from the study. Chefs around the world would be envious of her mother’s kitchen with its large countertops and open space to maneuver. The design also included Dutch ovens, two microwaves, plenty of pots and pans to choose from, top of the line knives for chopping and slicing, and three cutting boards were an added bonus to the setup.
Her gaze traveled over the pristine stovetop and counters, making it obvious no one had taken advantage of the cooking space in quite some time. She headed to the walk-in pantry and took note of the empty shelves where can-foods, spices, and other cooking items should have been stacked. To her left though the shelves were decorated with what she craved. Her mother may not have anything in the house deemed edible, but the woman always had tea in her cupboard.

No wonder her mother has kept her figure. lol Love to hear your feedback.

Unofficial Blurb for End of the Road
Lars Gunner, the frontman for Silent Plaids, died 23 years ago and is trapped in limbo until his daughter, Cecilia, unearths his journal and is able to see him. His death was ruled an unfortunate accident, but he’s convinced it had to be murder despite the fact he can’t recall what happened in his last moments of life. Cecilia seeks the help from Kaleb, a psychic, but as they resurrect the past, the secrets and lies surrounding Lar’s rock and roll life just may be the death of them too.

Great combination of the mystery of the book and the sadness of her mother’s condition!
What a lonely kitchen. Only tea? No wine, or chocolate or Nutella? lol Great snippet, Karen. 🙂
Siobhan,
Are we talking about your kitchen? lol
Now her mother does have wine. Just not in her pantry. lol Food- she’s all about keeping her figure. Eating is in option in her book. lol
Haha! I can relate. If I ever become eccentric and impractical, I’ll still manage to have an assortment of tea in my cupboard. 🙂
Good writing, Karen. The unused kitchen speaks volumes. 🙂
Teresa,
So glad the kitchen scene worked. 🙂 Thanks.
Beautiful snippet. The description of the kitchen is perfect.
Charmaine,
Great. I’m glad it wasn’t too much.
I’m not much of a cook, but with a kitchen like that, I’d definitely be making more than tea!
Christina,
Me too. lol
Very revealing glimpse into her mother, with all the details on the kitchen. Very much enjoyed this snippet! I did vote in the RONE, so wishing you much good luck there!
Veronica,
Thanks. Glad the detail to the kitchen rang true.
Voting for The Time Travel category for RONE Awards doesn’t start until tomorrow. 🙂
Lots of detail. I suspect her mother has other drinks in stock!
Aurora,
She keeps those drinks closer. lol
I want that kitchen!
(And I fully expect that when she leaves the pantry the journal will be on a counter…)
A sad kitchen that isn’t filled with food and spices and cookies and dirty pots and pans.
Tweeted.
All the HGTV addicts are going to love this snippet. (Me included.) What a waste–a beautiful kitchen. and no cooking going on.
A life on hold . . . for now. How lonely. Nice scene, Karen.
I imagine the kitchen as a bit of an allegory for her life at this point. Nicely evocative.
Thank you.
I like this woman … I have my tea everywhere! Liked the snippet, the analogy.
Iris,
Tea is good for every occasion.
Everything looks better after a cup of tea, great plan, and a great place.
Kim,
Yes, tea does do wonders.
Sadly, it sounds a bit like my kitchen, Karen. Good luck with the RONE award nomination!
Great snippet!
Yay for tea, boo on no snacks. Great snippet. 🙂
