About this snippet: Chapter Two (Cemetery Gates) Snippet #10.Β Check out last week’s snippet from Chapter Two snippet #9 here.
Setup for this snippet: The stranger claims to be her father who died twenty-three years ago. If that’s true why does he look like he hasn’t aged a day?
Now for the snippet…
***The story is in the very early stages and has not been edited.
She laughed and it came out like she’d lost her mind, but she had a full-on nerd moment with his, ‘I’m your father’ crapola. She’d watched an old sci-fi movie recently where the evil guy, with a definite breathing problem, revealed he was the father to the hero of the movie. What a sick joke and in a weird way this was no different. Her father had been gone a long time and even if this guy’s claims were true, which they weren’t, where had he been for twenty-three years?
“You have a warped sense of humor,” she said with a chuckled, but then reined in her laughter when Lars Lookalike didn’t appear amused, but really what had he expected? She cleared her throat. “Listen, I’m not sure what you think you’re going to gain here by pretending to be my father. Sure, you look a lot like him, but there’s just one flaw. My father, if he still lived and breathed, would be fifty years old.”
His expression plainly revealed his annoyance with her and he opened his mouth to say something but closed it again when the floor lamp behind him dimmed.
Can’t really blame her for not believing him, can you?Β lol
Blurb:
Lars Gunner, the frontman for Silent Plaids, died 23 years ago and is trapped in limbo until his daughter, Cecilia, unearths his journal and is able to see him. His death was ruled an unfortunate accident, but he’s convinced it had to be murder despite the fact he can’t recall what happened in his last moments of life. Cecilia seeks the help from Kaleb, a psychic, but as they resurrect the past, the secrets and lies surrounding Lar’s rock and roll life just may be the death of them too.

Oh the literal minded woman. lol He better come up with a good explanation to convince her of what he truly is. Great snippet, Karen! π
Hey, I know what science fiction movie she’s referring to. The “dad” wore a black helmet and muttered about The Force, right?
Yep, you are right. lol
I can see where she would think he was crazy. I like your story premise.
Cara,
Thank you.
I love your voice, Karen. Great hook!
Alexandra,
Thank you.
I definitely can’t blame her for not believing. Very intriguing!
Jessica,
Thank you.
That’s crazy! I wouldn’t believe someone if they told me that either, especially if it looks like they haven’t aged a day. Looking forward to his explanation, that should be good.
Jacob,
Glad you’re looking forward to finding out more.
The continuing story is interesting and I’m enjoying the debate over whether he’s really the father’s ghost or someone trying to play a trick! Good situation. The coy reference to Star Wars didn’t work for me (single person’s opinion here). It wasn’t a ‘sick joke’ in Star Wars and this IS different. Vastly different. See, you’ve riled me up and I’m not even that huge of a SW fan! π I guess bottom line to me is why distract your reader with this?
Veronica,
I have to say I’m kind of surprise at your outburst. lol But it is something to consider. Thanks.
I hear haunting music as background. I do enjoy your story and look toward more soon, Karen
Charmaine,
So glad you’re looking forward for more.
..’Or ‘may the ghost be with you’:) Great excerpt and I don’t blame her for being so dubious. (Just a little critty thing – you have ‘chuckled’ when it should be ‘chuckle’. Sorry, I’m revising my current WIP so in ‘editing’ mode’, LOL)
Hywela,
This is a WIP so glad for the imput. π
Really enjoyed the short passage from your book. Thanks for sharing. ~Keta~
Keta,
So glad you enjoyed the snippet.
I wonder if something supernatural made the light dim. Or was it Cecilia who dimmed it?
Stop by next week to find out. π
I sense he is not “alive and well.”
Kimberly,
You could be right. π
I am so loving this story, Karen!
Her reaction is logical and believable. π
Teresa,
So glad you’re liking the snippets.
Really like this and I’m anxious to see what happens with her and her dad.
Nancy,
So glad you’re enjoying the snippets.
He’s got some explaining to do1 Love how this story is progressing.
Christina,
So glad you’re enjoying the snippets.
I don’t think I would have believed him either.
Elaine,
I’m with you.
I like her reaction … very real … now i wonder, though, about the dim light. Well done.
Iris,
Glad you liked the snippet.
Villain with a breathing problem? Made me laugh. Not such a good idea in this taut, emotional scene. I just assumed a ghost, but Veronica’s comment about an imposter made me take notice. What a twist.
Diane,
Veronica did have a strong opinion. lol
Can’t blame her at all. It’s tough to swallow, though I admit, I’d probably be thinking ghost, by this point.
Caitlin,
Even though I want to believe in ghosts, I have a difficult truly going there. lol Now if he disappears…
I’m curious about the dimming light and why it made him not answer her.
