Welcome to Snippet Sunday.
Enjoy a snippet from last week: Flowers and Fangs, Chapter 4 #8
This week’s snippet is another snippet from Flowers and Fangs- Nominated for best New Adult book RONE Award.
Chapter 4. This is in Derek’s POV.
Quick update from last week: Sloane has been infected by a Nosferatu (vampire), and will change into the fiend. Derek’s job is to ‘stake and dust’ such creatures, but he remembers Sloane from high school. He dated her for a short time, and even though it’s been ten years and Sloane doesn’t seem to remember him, he can’t shake the feelings he had for her in the past. (We’ve skipped ahead a few paragraphs… after Sloane describes her evening with her boyfriend who had infected her and how it happened.) Also, remember from previous snippets, Derek called his brothers for backup. They’re on their way.

“I don’t feel so good,” she murmured as she leaned forward, clutching her stomach.
He’d bet since her lovely boyfriend hadn’t had time to give her the final bite to change her. Without the last bite, her body would weaken and she’d become feverish until she faded away. There was no cure and no going back to the way things were once bitten by a Nosferatu. By all means, it would be kinder if he killed her now. He palmed his dagger from his sleeve, but then she peered at him with those baby blues. “God, I’m going to regret this. Come on,” he demanded and grabbed her arm, but she yanked free of his grip.
“I’ve watched crime shows and going with you means death.”
He chuckled and said, “Honey, any other time I might agree, but right now I’m the only one standing between you and a stake through the heart.
********************************************************************
There’s no cure, but Derek doesn’t want to stake her. Hmm…what does he plan to do? His brothers certainly won’t share his compassion.

About the Book: My story in the collection is Heart of the Sea. Mermaids anyone?
What a compelling snippet. Great hook, Karen. Just from reading the snippets, I’m invested in the characters. They are both in bad positions right now. And I already really like him. He has a big heart. Still, I don’t know how this can end well. It definitely makes me want to put it the top of my TBR list. 🙂
Teresa,
Thanks so much. So glad you’re enjoying the snippets.
Loving this story. Haven’t had a chance to read it yet but I bought this book this week and it is now sitting on my Kindle, very intriguing story.
Chelle,
You are so sweet. Thanks so much for letting me know. I hope you enjoy the rest of the tale as well as you’re enjoying the snippets.
Hmm, interesting. For a moment, I thought he was offering himself up as a quick snack, lol!
Gayle,
lol- How very noble if he did.
Uh-oh, I foresee trouble ahead!
Christina,
Of course there is.
What a marvelously romantic last line … not!
Wow, what a situation! I’m enjoying the story so much, yet am at a loss for how they resolve this problem. Good job!
Veronica,
Actually, I’m glad you can’t. It makes it a bit more intriguing to find out.
Love that last line! This is where she says, “If I had a pint for every guy who told me that, I could start my own blood bank!”
Elizabeth,
lol- Great line!
Nice. I liked his smart-aleck remark at the end. Great snippet, Karen. 🙂
Siobhan,
So glad you’re liking Derek. 🙂
She has quite a choice to make — trust him or take her chances on her own. (And she doesn’t seem to be inclined to trust him.)
P.T.,
You might be right.
I don’t think I said it before, but congrats on the nomination! This is a great snippet, and warms me to Derek even more. 😀
Amy,
Thanks so much for the congrats. 🙂 Glad you’re liking Derek too.
Well, she’s damned if she does, damned if she doesn’t. So unfortunate that once you’re bitten, you die or become a vampire.
Surely there’s something he can do for her or he wouldn’t be taking her with him. I really hope so! Great snippet as always.
Gods, I am loving the exchange between these two. I feel like he is most definitely going to regret this, or at least get an earful about it from his brothers when they hear. I still feel as if she is going to be some sort of special case though and she won’t end up being a vampire, or waste away. Can’t wait to find out, but I love the almost ultimatum to this situation.
there needs to be a final bite? interesting.
And … not so sure about her choices … great snippet!
Especially when the stake might come from him. I wonder what he is going to do with her and if her boyfriend will try and risk a rescue.
