About this snippet: Chapter Two (Cemetery Gates) Snippet #6. Check out last week’s snippet from Chapter Two snippet #5 here.
Setup for this snippet: Cecilia heard a man’s voice as she was reading her late father’s journal. Only she was alone in the room and she’s trying to convince herself she must have fallen asleep and dreamt she heard a voice.
***The story is in the very early stages and has not been edited.

In her dream – because what else could it have been? She heard her father’s voice.
She cleaned the mug, dried it and returned it to the cupboard before she turned the lights off once more and entered the hallway to the study. She paused outside the door and stared into the living room, shadowed but not completely dark since the patio lights were on and their brilliance shaded the room in soft grays. A comfy sofa faced the large windows and the French doors. During the summer months, they used to leave those doors open and the ocean breeze would tease the senses as it filtered in and cooled the house. This part of the beach remained virtually private and very few people ever wandered down this far. The outside lights illuminated the lounge chairs and glass tables that decorated the patio, but she couldn’t see beyond that point where the sand and ocean met, but she could hear the seashell chimes hanging off the wood frame and it performed softly in tune with the wind and surf. The starfish clock hanging on the wall near the doors ticked with precision as if it also wanted to join in on the melody being played.
Her lips curved as she recalled the familiar sounds from her youth and she suddenly felt calmer…safer.

Will Cecilia’s sense of safety be shattered? Love to hear your feedback.
Unofficial Blurb for End of the Road
Lars Gunner, the frontman for Silent Plaids, died 23 years ago and is trapped in limbo until his daughter, Cecilia, unearths his journal and is able to see him. His death was ruled an unfortunate accident, but he’s convinced it had to be murder despite the fact he can’t recall what happened in his last moments of life. Cecilia seeks the help from Kaleb, a psychic, but as they resurrect the past, the secrets and lies surrounding Lar’s rock and roll life just may be the death of them too.

I’m wondering if the ghost is also controlling the environment to make her feel better after spooking her.
Linda,
You will have to wait and see. Perhaps Cecilia is trying to make herself feel safe and she’s picked up on the things that do.
Lovely descriptions … enjoyed the snippet!
Iris,
Thank you so much.
There’s nothing as reassuring as being home. Great job bringing that sense out in words.
Kim,
I’m glad you felt this way about the snippet. It was exactly what I was going for.
A peaceful scene indeed, loved the description and the memories it invokes for her. Really an excellent excerpt!
Veronica,
Thank you so much. Glad you enjoyed the snippet.
Great description to set the mood and possibly throw us off the safety issue. Bwahahahaha. Great snippet, Karen. 🙂
Siobhan,
You know me so well. lol
I’m perceiving a deep loneliness in her. The place seems peaceful, but she is NOT at peace.
Sue,
She’s trying to convince herself she’s alone and safe and she did not hear her dead father’s voice. Stop by next week and see how that worked. lol
Lovely scene!
Aurora,
Thank you.
Love the faint feeling that something ominous might lie beyond what she can see.
P.T.,
So glad you do. 🙂
No, I don’t feel peace for her yet. She has a way to go before reconciliation.
Charmaine,
She is trying.
Oh, man! I want to take a nap there (without the ghost, of course)! You paint a wonderfully vivid scene, Karen. Nice job!
Nancy,
So glad you love the Gunner’s home. 🙂
Nice description!
Thank you.
Sounds like a lovely place, but I have a feeling the unsettling events are just beginning.
Christina,
You may be right.
You’ve created a beautiful mood here. I can’t help but think, though, that her sense of peace stems not only from the peaceful scene but from hearing her father’s voice.
Ed,
You’ll have to wait and see. 🙂
Those lovely memories are treasures, but if I’d heard a voice I’d still be uneasy.
Elaine,
Me too. 🙂
Fantastic snippet! I felt like I was there!
Amy,
So wonderful I’m glad you did.
Wonderful descriptions and certainly a different feel from the last snippet, but I have a sneaky suspicion that’ll change soon.
Aldrea,
It just might. 🙂
Peaceful and lovely. You just know something will shatter that peace soon enough!
Caitlin,
Of course, it will. 🙂
The lovely, familiar sounds of the ocean, the chimes, and the clock should set her mind at ease. But she has to be asking herself if she really heard her father’s voice. Nice snippet.
I forgot to sign up, but I still posted my snippet. http://dianeburton.blogspot.com/
