Enjoy a snippet from last week: Flowers and Fangs #3
This week’s snippet is from Flowers and Fangs.
The three Hayes brothers arrived at the Wilkins’ home and have staked a Nosferatu (one of the more nastier vampires and the most lethal). The vamp’s been neutralized, but before they dust it, the brothers want to know who the Nosferatu has infected. The Nosferatu claims T. Wilkins has a girlfriend. then keeps repeating ‘Double the trouble.’ Whatever that may mean.
This is in Derek’s POV.

The Nosferatu paused and sniffed the air before he leveled his gaze on Axel. “You smell different, hunter.”
Derek frowned and stared at his brother. Axel didn’t answer, but lifted his sword and brought it down with one swift move. The head rolled to the side, still grinning. It cracked, shriveled, and then disintegrated into a pile of ash, seconds before the body followed suit.
A screech from behind them, made them whirl around to see a young male, early twenties and no doubt a vampire with his fangs showing. He was perched on the roof of the patio cover, glaring—his eyes glowed stoplight red.
“Mr. T. Wilkins,” Derek murmured. What other vamp would be so put out that the Nosferatu met its death?

That’s a really creepy scene! I’ve had a thing about decapitated heads ever since seeing Return to Oz, and had to be carried out of the theatre since I was so freaked out. It got even worse when I saw Night and Fog my junior year of high school. It’s even creepier when Vampyres are added into the mix.
Carrie-Anne,
Perfect. I wanted to pull off creepy. 🙂
Wow, so many vampires around. I wonder what it is about the smell that Axel wants to hide.
Linda,
Caught that, did you? lol
Enjoyed this snippet despite the creep factor! Great choice as a teaser too. 🙂
Joyce,
So glad you enjoyed the snippet.
Perfect scene. I so love the quick action.
Charmaine,
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed the snippet.
Interesting. I just have the feeling nothing is quite what it appears n this story and I’m very intrigued. Great snippet.
Veronica,
Glad you’re intrigued. 🙂
I’ve been watching this anime, Shiki, which brings up a point this snippet also made me think of. Are vampires people, too, with a right to live? Obviously slayers don’t think so…
The hunters may change their minds as the story progresses and they meet a few vampires or two. 🙂
I liked how you characterized the nosferatu.
Thanks, Ed.
Another vampire? Well… a story can never really have enough vampires in it, yea? I’m liking the feel of this story and the dynamic between the brothers.
Jeff,
I agree. There can never be enough vampires. lol
Vampire sounds scary!
Eerie and well done 🙂
Hmmm…wonder why Axel smells differently… Great, intense snippet!
So, what is Axel hiding, hmmm? I wonder if any of the others are asking themselves that same question. I think they’ll have to deal with the other vampire before they can explore that, though.
Cool snippet! I was intrigued enough to go download the book. 🙂 It is in a pretty long line at the moment, but I’m sure I’ll get to it eventually.
Thanks for posting!
Very chilling about the decapitation… without a word.
And scary to turn to find another vamp. Yikes.
