“That’s not true.” Sloane hissed and her eyes turned red. The telltale sign he’d been looking for. Derek threw her against the wall and pressed the crossbow at her chest, but instead of her attacking him, she panicked. Her arms raised in front of her. “Please…please, don’t hurt me.”
He hesitated. Then the truth of it slammed into him like a sledgehammer. His arm lowered. “You truly don’t know what you are, do you?” he said more for his benefit than for her to answer him.

She’s changing, but Derek continues to ignore the warnings. Mistake or not?

About the Book: My story in the collection is Heart of the Sea. Mermaids anyone?
Great snippet. Hmmm, I don’t know if he’s making a mistake to ignore the warnings or not. Can’t wait to see what happens!
Oh no, she has been changed. That complicates things. Great snippet, Karen.
Yes, it does.
I really wonder what is going on and why he is so sure that she is a vampire and why she has no clue if she is one. How the hell did that happen?
Linda,
All is revealed— eventually. 🙂
Kind of changes the situation from a simple hunt & destroy mission into something altogether more complicated. You capture the whole thing well. The emotions all ring true.
Jeff,
So glad it does. 🙂
Poor girl. And she had a lucky break when he found her first instead of his brothers. Hopefully he won’t break the news to her by putting a steak through the heart.
Karysa,
Derek may be the only one to keep her safe.
Bad idea to let his guard down like that…hope he regains his gut feeling again. 😉
TM,
We will see.
Oh, so she IS actually changing? I like her so I’m hoping this can be made to work out for them somehow. Great story.
Veronica,
You’ll have to wait and see.
Well, how would she know unless she was told? It’s not like people immediately think ‘someone bit me. Vampire!’
Great scene. I especially loved the last paragraph when he realizes that she doesn’t know. (Now, how is he going to break the news to her and convince her?)
Hey, it happens. Not everyone knows what they are…or do they? Hehehe.
Elizabeth,
lol- so very true.
Very interesting. Sounds like she’s in a complex situation.
Gayle,
It truly is complex. 🙂
Damn. I hope something can be done to help her, preferably that doesn’t involve his crossbow!
Congrats on the nomination!
Poor Sloane, she’s so confused. This is going to brew all sorts of trouble with his hesitance, but I almost wonder if there is going to be something special about Sloane’s vampirism. Something that will set her apart from others and not make her a threat to eliminate since she didn’t attack like he expected.
Great snippet … i wonder what he’s going to do. Or is she pretending?
