Setup for this snippet: WIP from Heart and Soul. This is a snippet from my new ‘rock star romance’ that I’m working on. It’s in the very early stages.
Last week : Maverick somehow knew how she liked to take her tea. Rowan asked him how he knew. She’s waiting for his answer.
This is Rowan’s POV.
***
Rowan waited for Maverick to answer but her question seemed to have stumped him into silence.
How did he know she liked Earl Grey lattes with just a splash of vanilla? There were a million other ways she could have taken her tea. She could have liked herbal tea concoctions or green tea with lemon and honey but no, he had brewed her an Earl Grey latte.
However, before Maverick could formulate an answer, a ginger-haired man, standing at the doorway to what she assumed was the kitchen, called out to him. “I’m going out back to throw out the trash,” the ginger-haired man told him. “Do you want me to dump the boxes by the door too?”
Maverick glanced at Rowan with an apologetic shrug, “I need to take care of this,” he said and walk away, but Rowan had the oddest feeling he used the excuse as a way to escape. She glanced at her cup a second time but then indulged in the black tea flavored with bergamot, the vanilla flavor sweetening the taste to perfection.

Love to hear your feed back. π
About Heart and Soul…
80s rock star, Haley Rose went missing without a trace on October 31 1988 and was eventually presumed dead. Three decades later, a thirty-year old woman, Rowan Beckett recalls things only Haley Rose would know and she can belt out songs in the same fashion as the missing 80s star. However, Rowan couldn’t be the missing rock star since the woman would now be in her fifties. Could Haley Rose have came back reincarnated as Rowan Beckett?

Seizing on an excuse not to answer might just pique her curiosity, unless she forgets all about it.
Ed,
Maybe. π
The thing is, I’m not sure Maverick consciously knows. Great snippet, Karen. In the third paragraph, you can take out the second reference to the ginger-haired man and just make the dialog all one piece. It’s pretty obvious that it’s the ginger speaking. π
You might be right about Maverick. π
Thanks for the tip too.
I donβt blame Maverick for wanting to get out of there. Though it does nothing to reassure her!
Especially since Maverick doesn’t understand it himself. π
So it seems she doesn’t know what’s going on either.
Auroa,
No, she doesn’t.
I liked the inexplicable nature of the tea being prepared just the way she drinks it! So cool…enjoyed the excerpt!
Sounds like yummy tea! π
It is a yummy tea.
Yeah, that was totally an excuse to duck an awkward question. Understandable, given that the options range from stalker-creepy to paranormal π
Botanist,
So very true. π
Great way to show characterization with something as simple as a preference.
Trin,
Thank you.
Perfect timing from the ginger-haired man. Great snippet!
Elyzabeth,
Yes, it was.
Hmm, I was thinking Maverick might be anticipating that she’d like the Earl Grey latte (my own favourite as it happens) subconsciously. I have a feeling she’s not going to let him get away without answering though, despite perversely going for the black tea.
Earl Grey Lattes are my favorite too.
I’m enjoying watching this story come to life. π
No snippet for me this week.
It is a weirdly specific drink for him to give her. It must be magic!
I have to try that Early Grey latte one day π
Liked the snippet … i wonder whether she’ll ask again when he returns ….
He is definitely escaping. I can’t wait to see them have a real conversation and get everything out in the open.
