He may be a brooding man, but he was still a man regardless of his claim of waiting for a soul mate. She couldn’t imagine him waiting to have sex with his one true love, but she had a hunch casual sex didn’t fit his persona either and she had to ask: “Do you truly believe there’s a soul mate waiting for you?”
“I need to hope. I take it ye never been in love.”
“Of course I have, but the relationships didn’t last.” His lips curved into a ghost of a smile and the thought rankled her that she’d amused him in some way. “Listen, Alan—”
He didn’t wait for her to finish and said, “There was somethin’ missin’ in these relationships of yers, aye?”

If you’re interested here’s a blurb for Magic of the Loch:
Michaela Grant travels to Scotland for a holiday, knowing this vacation is her last. A medical condition threatens her life and any chance of a future—until she meets Alan MacLachlin, a man forced to exist between two worlds.
Alan is the legendary Loch Ness Monster. Once every fifty years he returns to human form in search of his soul mate, the one woman who can break his curse. He believes he has found forever with Michaela, but to claim it he must figure out how to save her life.
Michaela and Alan vow to take what time has to offer, but another threat looms. A sinister shape shifter with a vendetta against Alan is making Loch Ness his personal hunting ground. Now he’s threatening Michaela. Alan must discover who the shifter is and stop him before it’s too late.

I’ve always been intrigued with the Loch Ness creature. I’m so glad you enjoyed the snippet. 🙂
He’s waiting for his soulmate. Why do I think it might be her? Great snippet. But you have 6 paragraphs, right?
Jean,
You could be right. 🙂
Six paragraphs? Only 8 sentences for me since I also belong to the 8 sentence Sunday group. 🙂
Lovely line: I take it ye never been in love.
Very well done. Love the snippet.
So glad you enjoyed his response. 🙂
Love is complicated and I like how he thinks something was missing in her relationships. Wonder if she’s up to his challenge? Good snippet!
Frank,
I think she will… You’ll have to wait and see. 🙂
Enjoying their conversation very much, can’t wait to see where it all ends up (although I have my suspicions LOL). Great excerpt!
Veronica,
Thanks so much. I’m thrilled you’re enjoying the snippets.
Love is complicated – especially with Alan. Great snippet, Karen. 🙂
Siobhan,
Yes, it is. 🙂
Means a lot to him, but maybe not to her, at least yet.
Lovely scene. He may have been ill but he sure is quick witted.
Smart man to see right through her. Your writing is delightful, Karen. I’m enjoying your story so very much.
Such a fascinating twist on the Loch Ness legend, very intriguing. Love the dialect, it’s just enough to hear and not so overwhelming. He also seems nicely intuitive.
It helps to think of every failed relationship as bringing oneself closer to finally finding the right person, if a romantic soulmate is out there in this lifetime. Sometimes a soulmate can be a very close friend, if one doesn’t have any luck in love.
She thought she was in love…I think that’s the point he’s making. You weren’t really IN love.
Methinks he knows just what was missing and will show her. Love this interaction. Can’t wait to see more between these two.
That was an easy guess, I wonder if he also knows what was missing.
I wanna know what she was going to say before he interrupted!
