The moment Sanya entered the bar, Garran MacLaurin’s scent slammed into her, causing the icy fear to twist at her heart. Through the throng of patrons’ laughter and carrying on as they drank themselves into oblivion, she spotted him. He sat alone in the back, beneath the dim overhead lights. She immediately scanned the bar looking for his furry sidekick, Harrison Connell. She didn’t see him, but she would bet the werewolf lurked somewhere close.
Sanya concentrated on MacLaurin again. He appeared relaxed as if he enjoyed the Irish band’s poor rendition of Danny Boy. Good, he hadn’t noticed her…yet.

Who thinks MacLaurin is aware Sanya entered the bar? lol
So….Have you ever tried to avoid someone in store, restaurant, or any other place and have slipped away hoping they wouldn’t notice you? Did you have a good reason for slinking away?

A short Irish paranormal time travel romance
Kendra O’Reilly felt a connection with the Blarney Castle as if the echoes of the past could still be heard. The guide tells her a story about the Blarney Stone being the ancient Lia Fáil, one of the magical gifts from the god-like race, the Tuatha Dé Danann. To wish upon it, one will see where his or her destiny lies. Kendra wishes to find her one true love. She never thought she’d be whisked back to fifteen-century Ireland to find him.
Cian MacCarthy, the Lord of Blarney not only possesses the gift of Irish eloquence but he also has visions of the future. He’s waited for Kendra’s arrival, knowing she is his soul mate. Now all he has to do is convince her she belongs at
First of all, is there such a thing as a GOOD rendition of “Danny Boy”?
Second, wonderful setting — I could see it and was totally drawn into the story.
Third, I love the blurb and am really looking forward to getting to know the characters and read more of the story.
Fourth, I really don’t think there is such a thing as a good rendition of “Danny Boy.”
P.T.,
Lol– re: a good rendition of Danny Boy– I might just have to agree. 🙂
I’m so glad you were drawn into the story and look forward to more. Thanks so much.
A vampire, a werewolf, and a Necromancer walk into a bar . . .
I’m so there! Great beginning, Karen!
(I like the Muppets’ version of Danny Boy—Animal has chops)
Sarah W,
I forgot about the Muppet’s version. lol
And Glad you like the beginning.
Oooh, that sounds really intriguing. Great setup and great snippet, Karen. 🙂
Siobhan,
Thanks so much. Glad you were intrigued.
Interesting. I’m guessing he knows…but I guess we’ll see.
Sarah,
You’ll have to wait and see. 🙂
An unusual take on the senses – great that scent is the first thing that hits her across a crowded bar. Wonder if his senses are as sharp as hers?
Botanist,
Thank you for the compliment.
About his senses? Hmm… He is a vampire, too. 🙂
I’d assume he has seen her.
I love the idea of the Vampyre, werewolf, and necromancer team. It reminds me of the British show Being Human, which features a Vampyre, werewolf, and ghost.
Carrie-Anne,
Thanks so much. Glad you’re intrigued with the team. I penned this tale over ten years ago and sat on it forever before I dusted it off, edited it and finished it so I could send it off to my publisher. lol
The characters are pretty satisfied with who they are and don’t mind they’re monsters. lol It’s when the monsters don’t play by the rules when it gets pretty messy. Can’t have werewolves, vampires and the like going on a killing spree just because they feel like it. 🙂
I have seen Being Human- the British version. But I stopped watching it when they killed off Aiden. Just wasn’t the same. Didn’t see but a few episodes of the US version. Maybe I’ll check it out again when it’s available on Netflix.
A strange alliance to be sure. And yes, I was wondering if he knew she was there even before you asked. Very intriguing snippet.
Chelle,
Thanks. So glad you’re intrigued.
I love the way this starts and was immediately drawn into the scene, kind of hunching over so he wouldn’t see me either LOL! Can’t wait for more, terrific snippet!
Veronica,
lol- Hope he doesn’t see you.
Has me wondering what Sanya is.
Sue Anne,
You’ll know soon enough.
The scent, “slamming”, into your character is a very powerful sensory image. Nicely done.
