Welcome to Snippet Sunday. I thought I’d change it up a little this week. I have a new release! So this is a snippet from The Gryphon and His Thief.
If you missed the last weeks snippet from The Gryphon & His Thief, here’s the link. Chapter 2 #8
Set up: This scene takes place a couple of paragraphs later than last week.
Darrien discovers the thief looks curiously like his wife who has died centuries ago. He was cursed because he had not protected her. Not wanting to leave her unconscious in the parking lot, he scoops her into his arms heads inside her motel room and places her on the bed.
This is in Darrien’s POV. (If you are just joining Snippet Sunday, Calli is wearing a ski mask. A point made in a previous snippet.)
*The excerpt was modified to fit the 8 sentence limit.

His hand brushed a wayward strand from her face and she stirred, leaning toward his caress as if she sought his touch. No fiery spark, but he could still feel the energy pulsing between them as her cheek touched his palm. His plans to eliminate her had taken a sharp turn. “Ah Callista, what am I to do now?” His guardsman’s duties bade him to protect the cursed treasures at all cost. “…all costs,” he murmured then shook his head. He could not harm Callista. Not when he’d been waiting all these centuries for her soul to be reborn to this world.
***********************************************************
Darrien has been cursed to protect the cursed treasures. What will happen if Calli refuses to return the object she stole?

Wonderful descriptions, and interesting how the thief looks like his dead wife. It almost makes him not want to pursue her. Tough spot for Darren, I think.
Frank,
It is a very tough spot for Darrien. Thanks so much for stopping by. 🙂
So touching, Karen. He’ll have to protect her now that she’s returned but what about her thievery? You’ve left us with a cliffhanger.

There’s always a loophole! And luckily Calli is as resourceful as he’s determined.

Smoothly written and good tension. What do you plan to do to keep it from being a too-familiar trope?
Jean,
Wait and see.
she’s just reborn and already gets him in trouble! I love it! 🙂

Trouble has just begun for these two. lol

No fiery spark… but there seems to be a little slow burn happening. Nice work!
I bet they didn’t take the reborn soul into account when they made his contract. Now he has two things to protect, I like that!
